Life, some recs, and a duck

Hi!

Not dead or even close, really. But it has been a helluva year and a half or maybe three. I know I haven't been gone that long, but it feels like it. I'm kind of emerging from a fog, at least I hope I'm emerging. Some things I have learned recently:

1) You all are awesome and gryffindorj has an extra side of wonderful. Thank you to her and all of you who participated in for_min. ♥ x 1,000.
2) I've missed being around here more regularly or at all. I've missed writing more and commenting and rec'ing and I hope to be back and stop having to apologize to mods as of…right now.
3) Cancer sucks and so does losing a parent and my family is actually crazier than I thought.
4) I could grow old and wither away waiting for the kid to get out of the car. Seriously. I have tried to wait him out, just see how long it would take if I don't prompt him, hurry him along, pull him out of the car. I have never, not once, been able to wait him out. I always lose it and say, "would you please get out of the car?!" I asked him the other day to guess how many days of my life I had spent waiting for him to get out of the car thus far and he said, "About four weeks. Hey, have you ever noticed how people who have cats tend to get more cats?"
5) I have not updated my masterlist or reposted fest fics here for about a year and a half. I shall get right on that…now.

I was out of town last week and did not get on line at all because of lack of internet and many kids around. As a result I: missed my daily_deviant posting date (thank goodness for the benevolent r_grayjoy for a new date and for woldy for communicating my fail to her); missed the NEWT level trivia test at rs_games (but because Team Sirius is made of awesome, we still won without my alleged brilliance – or because I didn't participate, not sure which); and I was nearly booted out of hd_holidays (thank all that is good for gryffindorj for telling the mods she was sure I was not dropping out and letting me know that I was on the bad participant list – I hate being a bad participant). See? NEVER, EVER leave the internets!!!! Bad things happen. There might be a lesson about kids here as well… HOWEVER, I choose to take all of these as indications of the fabulousness of my flist. And now for MORE fabulousness of my flist:

The wonderful torino10154 wrote me a fabulous fic for my birthday!! It is h/d, rated R for ridiculously sexy (what?) Appetizer. It is a delicious bit of naughtiness right before the in-laws come calling. It is much loveliness in 665 words -- more than worth the time. Please go and read it and leave her a lovely comment.

Some of the themes at daily_deviant this month are body writing, authority role plays, and Charlie/Draco as an alternate pairing. As you might expect, this has resulted in some delicious porn. Here are some I really enjoyed and you might, too:

Is "Scoprius" the sports version of a hybrid toyota? I've typed this enough times tonight that it must mean something.

Here's a conversation from my recent travels. This is the one that made me laugh inside. I shall spare you things the uncle to which I gladly claim no relation said, mostly because I don't want to see them in print:

Holy hotness, people. Have you had a gander at Daily Deviant lately? The past few days have brought us some amazing collaborations!! So, have some recs, all m/m this time, all pornypornporn.

So, first there was Seeing Is Believing by sdk and torino10154. Here we have Harry/Draco AND Al/Scorpius, with lots of filthy sex and very wrong voyeurism. It is a quick and dirty 1800 words. You will not be sorry.

And then there was Rampaging Dragons and Libidinous Books: A Beginners Guide to Mastering Sex and Discovering Hidden Desires by r_grayjoy and art (omg, LOTS of fabulous art) by someoldcat, and now we have Severus/Sirius in school, but not hate sex and not unrealistically schmoopy – somehow they pulled this off. There is a great variety of sexual activity here, but also so much story. These two are quite a team!!!

And as if THAT wasn't enough, there is H/D by snegurochka_lee and ericahpfa!!! Interoffice Communication -- here, for your pleasure, is magical sexting, UST, that culminates deliciously, totally recognizable Harry and Draco all grown-up. There is a lot of story here too, with Lee's fabulously tight and vibrant writing, and Erica's stunning artwork, with a kiss you can feel and hair you can run your fingers through.

And now I notice that there is a Bill/Neville, with some Severus/Harry by alisanne and unbroken_halo with art by vividzephyr. Stop. Things are required of me!

And soon, we will have some hp_nextgen_fest recs, because there is some fabulous stuff over there too and that is what I meant to post next!

~ I have to accept the following things: I am not the kind of person who puts every photo into an album; unless the school bake sale is on a Monday, my kid is taking something bought in a store; AND I will just not finish an end of year writing round-up or meme of any sort. I have to let these things go. So, I don't know how many words I wrote this year (quite a few, I think), how many stories, how many pairings, or well, anything. What I do know is that writing has been hard this year because it was a helluva a year in many ways and my kid is no longer reliably asleep at 8:30. But, I kept writing. That is my year in review. :)

~ I do, however, have make some more progress on my master list and post, oh about six, fest and other fics here that I have left hanging. Those will be coming soon. I am quite pleased with a few of them, tbh, if only because they got written!

~ THANK YOU, THANK YOU J!!! So much fabulous!!! I have a conference to go to next week – one that scary people will be attending. I have to have a proper suit. I did not have a proper suit that fit me. I now have a proper, kick-ass, who-are-you-questioning-I-am-the-expert-suit THAT IS NOT TOO BIG!! *tackles* (better start Game On again soon, or it won't fit. :P)

rl, fic for me, and stuff

So flist, did you know that taking care of someone who has just had open heart surgery is a bloody lot of work? I suppose that's obvious, but it is. This is why I haven't been around much. :P

I am supposed to take the kid camping with a big group of friends this weekend. Not sure how this is going happen. I will be doing a lot of back and forth, I guess. I know friends will help, but I may be out of touch again this weekend and I may need to mainline coffee.

I think I may have gained back all the weight l lost in the last round of Game On. I am not going to worry about it, though, because that would be self-defeating and whatever, really. And….the next round starts on June 2nd! I will be so, so ready and I will continue to drink wine and eat chocolate at the end of these long days until June 1st.

Right, I'm a bit of a drag here, so in other news – FIC FOR ME!!!!

Prizes from the last round of game_is_on (because romaine and I kicked their arses (of course, they kicked the collective arse of me, lyras, and elizassecret this last round. Wait a moment, romaine seems to win all the time *note to self: put Rom on my team again next time):

This is a quick, short, snappy back and forth between Remus and Sirius that is sexy, funny, and sweet. YAY! And it's mine, but you should read it and leave a lovely comment. :D

Step by Step (A Beginners Guide to Bringing James Potter to Your Bed) by gryffindor_j: Scorpius has been tasked with seducing James – by Teddy!! Scorpius follows the step-by-step given to him by Teddy. They include "bring him to me," which I have on good authority was said with a wolfish growl. I don't think I need to tell you anything else. I have to share this one with Rom, which I don't mind and we both, I'm sure encourage you to share our good fortune and leave some love.

Written for me at hp_beholder: Dogs of War by alimsiemanym. It is a gritty, carefully crafted story with an unflinching portrait of war. Mind the warnings, but read it for the believable, intense and incredibly touching relationship and the genuine characterizations of Moody and Scrimgeour. A really moving, vivid, and detailed fic.

I wrote, The News Today (Morning Edition), which I'll repost here soon. It has the pairings: Augusta/Moody, Minerva/Arabella, and Arthur/Molly. That's right. I not only wrote het, I wrote het that wasn't James/Lily and I wrote Weasley het. I am rather pleased with how some bits of this turned out. :)

I planned, and still plan, to do some more recs from hp_beholder. In the meantime, check out the masterlist and just pick something to read/view. Don't go by pairing or the authors and artists you know (except, of course, for mine). You really can't do that at this fest. It is such a fabulous fest and the overall quality is really stellar.

As usual, hp_beholder has some amazing stuff. As usual, I am behind on reading and commenting and rec'ing, but here are some I have particularly enjoyed so far:

Title: Swings and roundabouts
Rating: PG
Pairings: Dudley/OC, Petunia/OC
Word Count: 1,980
Summary: In which Dudley finds, and loses, and rediscovers love, and Petunia hopes he'll find himself.

A very easy to read, nicely written story with great flow and pacing. The pairing works so well—don't let the OC frighten you off. Petunia was really well portrayed. And the author throws in a couple of lines that let you know that this more likeable Dudley is still completely Dudley.

Title: The rest of the mornings in the world
Rating: R
Pairings: Horace Slughorn/Cornelius Fudge
Word Count: ~5,500
Summary: After the Battle of Hogwarts, Horace finds an opportunity to repay a favour to an old friend.

The exploration of Slughorn's character is brilliant. The author looks at his feelings about how the war(s) went and his role and how it might affect him after in a way I hadn't thought of. The friendship between Horace and Cornelius builds and changes for reasons I won't mention for spoiling it, but it is lovely and poignant. A beautifully done story.

Title: Zinnia and Honeysuckle
Rating: R-ish
Pairings: Hooch/Sprout // Hooch/Neville (if you squint)
Word Count: ~1,200
Warnings: Featured Character Death.
Summary: Muggle plants bloom out of season in the wizarding world. They flourish and wither at the whim of magical energies, a barometer of wizard emotions.

This one is just so pretty. There are several lovely vignettes—a little melancholy, a little sweet. It is very easy on the eyes and beautifully written.

Title: A Small Touch of Luck
Rating: NC-17
Pairings: Severus Snape/Filius Flitwick

I have already shared that Daily Deviant's birthday party was the place to be last month. AND OMG EEEEEEEEE!! LOOK AT THIS!! Two artists did pieces based on my very first fic there. 1) I went out to run errands wearing my slippers this afternoon.

2) Conversation overheard between my son and his friend while the two boys are playing with their pokemon cards. Friend, "This says I'm in love. Why do I have to be in love? That sucks." Son, "You're in love? In your face! Ha ha." Friend, "I'll get out and it could be worse. At least I'm in love with you." Son, "That's true. Let's keep playing." I actually have no idea what any of this means.

3) midnitemaraud_r, red_sqaured, gryffindor_j, and I held a little birthday party for Remus the other night. Four fics, all Remus/Sirius. I highly recommend each of theirs. They are ranging in rating from PG-13 to NC-17, they are all funny, sweet, and sexy. You can find them HERE, along with mine (which is porn, because gryffindor_j told me to. It also has wall sex because once upon a time, gryffindor_j pointed out to me that I had never written R/S wall sex).

4) OMG, did you all check out Daily Deviant yesterday?? Well, this whole month—the community's birthday party. All the fics are remixes of previous DD works and it has been a pretty fabulous month. Yesterday was a banner day over there with two fabulous fics:

A Job With Benefits by woldy, rated R, is an absolutely charming, romantic, funny Hooch/Pomfrey. There is a lovely sex scene that will make you sigh. What I was most struck by with this one is that it is such a complete story in its just over 1,000 words. It won't take you long, and it will make you happy.

Betrayal is a Thorny Crown (You Wear It Well) by snegurochka_lee, rated NC-17, Teddy/James, is achey, hot, gripping, emotionally complex, and beautifully written. There is a scene where James confronts Teddy that made my breath catch. The tension is palpable. It follows wonderfully from the incredible original, Bruised Like a Cherry (Ripe as a Peach)—omg, so hot. A fabulous Victoire, wonderful supporting characters, and did I say HOT?? Really, go and read it.

5) midnitemaraud_r just informed me that the clocks turn back, turn ahead, whatever, it is LATER THAN I THOUGHT, tonight. Damn. :P
